Letters written by SSG John Brey Jr. to his wife between March 1943 and July 1945, covering training in USA, Deployment to England, France, front line service up to being wounded in 1944, and 7 months recuperation in England, and Topika Kansas.
This is a posthumously published blog of letters written by SSG John Brey Jr. to his wife Peg between March 1943 and July 1945, covering training in USA, Deployment to England, France, front line service up to being wounded at the battle for Metz on Nov 13, 1944, and 7 months recuperation in England, and Topika Kansas. His wife delivered his first son, Jack in March 1945 while John was in route back to the US from England. After convalescent leave in May 1945, John remained away from his new family in an Army Hospital in Kansas until his discharge at the end of July.
This blog is maintained by Ken Brey with thanks to Jack Brey who did the scanning and organization, Dot Fulks who holds the original letters and Ed Brey who helped with the technical aspects of creating the blog.
Want to help? Post comments which include the full text of the letters. I will integrate the full text into the blog when there is enough of it.
Haven’t been on the ball lately with writing – but from now on I’ll write a note each day at least! Am feeling fine – and it’ll be just a short while till I’m back on my feet – have been in bed better than a month now – and that’s too much – if it wasn’t for that appendix kicking up a fuss I’d more than likely be walking now – will be that much longer from the front through – so I don’t mind! Although my leg was worst off than an appendix affection. It wasn’t as bad – because I had a pretty miserable stomach for the past – tomorrow the sticker come out and all will be well! Just hope everything goes as successful for you – even if it is far greater – having gone thru the little I have makes me
worry all the more about you! The time seems to be going so swiftly Honey – gee our baby will be here before we realize it – sure hope that the war will be over by then – although that seems to be wishful thinking! Damn it all anyway – I’m so disgusted with all this – and when at the front it seemed so darn foolish – hunting each other to kill – I don’t believe in it – still will kill every damn German I see – double talk!! Gee Honey but I’m so terribly lonesome for you – miss you more each day – still quell any thought of our good times in Person. – Just can’t fall them – course I just get sick when I think of the good times we have had & still could be having it wasn’t for this – I Love you so darn much Honey!!
Enclosed is a clipping from the Stars & Stripes – guess the guys are really
doing good – they really are in the center of the 3rd Army Drive – Old Blood & Guts – having a very good opinion of Patton – can’t tell why – but someday I’ll tell you a little story!
Say hello to all Darling – and if you can call home – love writing them, but not so often – and do take care of yourself Honey – cause you’re the world to me!
Goodnight & God Bless you Darline! I Love you Loads!
